October Female - Alison Fienning
Name: Alison Fienning
Where did you grow up? Miamisburg, Ohio
When did you become a member of the Cornerstone community? In 8/2015 I became a member of Cornerstone after my husband initially came in for a drop in class and raved about how much he loved it! Shortly after becoming members we found out we were expecting an addition to our family. I continued to come and do as much as I could, however due to some medical issues we put our membership on hold in early 2016 until we returned in 2/2017.
What do you do when you are not at Cornerstone? (occupation, hobbies, etc.) Besides chasing my 15 month old daughter Launa, I am a licensed independent social worker and clinically supervise a youth mental health and drug and alcohol program in butler county.
What is your favorite WOD/movement? Snatch, Clean and jerk and deadlifting.
What is your least favorite WOD/movement? Although I’ve been working on this movement, running is my least favorite.
What would your perfect WOD look like? Short, sweet and to the point- and not too confusing! Oh and someone to count for me and change any weights.
What is your favorite accomplishment/PR since becoming a part of Cornerstone? Since joining back in February I have begun training with coach Brandon for Olympic weight lifting and will soon obtain my USAW card and hope to begin competing. I started OLY training for ME and something I’ve wanted to do since I was a teenager. As a new mother I felt lost and needed something that I was passionate about and could also use as a release with all the other everyday garbage we all go through. So now I guess I’m living out a dream.
I’ve also started working very hard on the things I do outside of the gym and have lost 45 lbs. I’ve worked with doctors and nutritionist to figure out what is best for me. I have been on a roller coaster for the last few years with my weight going up and down and trying to figure out what I need to do in order to maintain a healthy whole body structure that fit me! This was something very new to me as I was getting on every bandwagon out there trying the latest ‘new diets’ and would just yo-yo with my weight.
What is something about yourself that we might not know? I have two trained German Shepherds. One in particular is a trained Search and Rescue (SAR) dog, Fritz. He and I were on a team where we would be called out to find missing people in rural areas. Through my SAR team we were trained in various types of elements and I was also the assistant dog trainer and aided in training other K9’s.
What advice would you give to someone just getting starting at Cornerstone? Don’t compare yourself to anyone else but who you were the day before. Find out what YOUR goals are and continue to talk to those in the cornerstone community about possible ways to achieve them; not just inside the gym but outside the gym as well.
What goals do you have for the rest of 2017? Compete in a USAW lifting event December 2017, and hope to PR my snatch by 1/1/18.
